General
How does this site work?
Bread&Water is a charity site that has the look and feel of "on-line shopping." Through our site, donors can "browse" the needs of those around the world and designate their contributions to the cause of their choice.

What percentage of my money goes directly to the cause I select?
Bread&Water believes in giving our donors the power to decide how their donations are spent. As a result, unless you specifically designate your contribution to the running of Bread&Water, we do not take out any percentage of your contribution to support our administrative costs. With the exception of any charges associated with your transaction (eg. bank or credit card), 100% of your donation goes towards the cause that you specify. Please show us your support in helping to keep this practice alive.

How can I join Bread&Water's team of volunteers?
Bread&Water is always looking for new talent to help us with the many aspects that go into building and running our organization. Please contact us if you are interested in helping.

Tax Deductions
Are my donations tax-deductible?
Yes. Bread&Water is a US-based IRS-approved tax-exempt non-profit charity registered under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Each contribution that you make to Bread&Water can be itemized on your income tax return. To simplify this process, Bread&Water provides you with an annual statement of contributions.

Is there ever a time when my contribution to Bread&Water is not tax-deductible?
If you are using a portion of your contribution to purchase goods, the value of the goods you received as a result of your contribution is not considered tax-deductible. Bread&Water will issue you a receipt for the tax-deductible portion of your contribution.

What records must I keep to file my tax-deductions?
The IRS requires the following documentation: If the contribution is less than $250: The email confirmation you receive following your donation or a printout of your account information showing the amount paid to Bread&Water is sufficient. If the contribution is more than $250: The IRS requires an acknowledgment from Bread&Water of your contribution. The year end statement of your contributions that Bread&Water mails out to each of our donors is sufficient. If you wish, you can also print receipts for each of your transactions by accessing your account information on our site. If you make more than one contribution of $250 or more: The acknowledgement requirement is the same as above. You can have either a separate acknowledgment for each or one acknowledgment that shows your total contributions.

How can I get a receipt for a past donation?
You can print receipts for all your past donations by accessing your account information and clicking on the appropriate transaction number, which will link you to the printable receipt for that transaction.

Gift Certificates
How do gift certificates work?
Much like a gift certificate you might receive for credit at a store, Bread&Water's gift certificates function as credit towards any of the charitable causes on our site. Bread&Water gift certificates are an innovative and meaningful gift where you make the donation and your recipient chooses the causes.

How do I redeem my gift certificate?

Paper gift certificates: Proceed as normal, browsing our site and selecting the cause(s) you want to support. When you click 'check out,' you will have three payment options. Select the gift certificate option and type in the serial number and passcode shown on your gift certificate.
On-line gift certificates: Copy down the serial number and passcode shown in the email you received as you will need it to complete your transaction. Click on (or copy and paste into your browser) the link shown in the email to view your on-line gift certificate greeting. When finished, click 'start browsing' and proceed according to the directions given above for paper gift certificates.

How do I send someone a gift certificate?
Access our gift certificates page either by clicking on 'gift certificates' from our top navigation bar or by selecting gift certificates from the great gifts page. To create the gift certificate, you will need to specify the amount of your gift and also provide your recipient's e-mail address or mailing address, depending on the delivery option you select. Check out as normal. You will receive an e-mail confirmation of your donation. If you chose to deliver the gift via e-mail, your recipient will receive an e-mail telling him/her of the gift with a link to the on-line gift certificate greeting you created. If you chose to deliver the gift via mail, the gift certificate will be mailed to your recipient along with instructions on how to redeem it.

Designated Gifts
How do designated gifts work?
Designated gifts allow you to make a donation to a cause of your choice in honor of someone else. The recipient of your gift will receive an email telling him/her of the gift with a link to the on-line designated gift greeting you created.

How do I send someone a designated gift?
Proceed as normal, browsing our site and selecting the cause(s) you want to support. When adding the item(s) you selected into your donation basket, designate the gift to 'Other.' (Regular donations, by default, are designated to 'Self.') When you click 'check out,' you will be prompted to create a greeting and enter your recipient's name and email address for delivery. Click 'submit' when you have completed the information form. You will be prompted a separate time for each designated gift item in your donation basket. Complete check out as normal.

How do I view the designated gift sent to me?
The email sent to you informing you of the gift contains a link to the greeting your sender has created for you. To open the greeting, either click on this link or copy and paste it into your browser window.

Account Information
How do I access my account information?
From any Bread&Water page that shows our navigation items, click on 'account info' and log in. Note: You need to have registered with Bread&Water to have an account. If you have ever made donation to Bread&Water through our website, you were required to register.

What should I do if I forget my account password?
From the login page, click on the "forgot password" link and follow the prompts.

Making Transactions
Why doesn't the %met gauge move after I make a donation?
There are 2 possible reasons that the %met gauge doesn't move after you make a donation:
1. The gauge is set up to move in 10% increments, and your donation amount was not large enough to trigger and increment.
2. If you made a donation by check, the %met gauge will only be incremented after your check has been processed. Check back in a few days.

Who should I make my checks payable to?
Make checks payable to "Bread&Water."

Where should I mail my check donations?
Bread&Water
P. O. Box 22

Donations made from outside the US may or may not be tax deductible, depending on you national tax laws.
