Location: Assam, India
Organization: Himalayan Ministries
Description: The Hawaipur School seeks to give severely disadvantaged Nepalese children a chance to gain a quality education. As a result of ethnic discrimination, poverty and illiteracy is widespread among the Nepalese in Assam. Nepalese Christians face particularly severe discrimination as they are a persecuted minority among an already marginalized people. The Hawaipur School extends beyond ethnic and religious barriers to offer Nepalese children from Kindergarten to 10th grade the chance for an education alongside their non-Nepalese peers. The school consists of both paying and non-paying students. All of the schoolÂ’s non-paying students supported by Bread&Water live on the school premises because they come from remote, undeveloped areas and face no other possibilities for school.
For years, the Hawaipur SchoolÂ’s premises consisted of simple thatched-wall buildings and unfinished mud floors. Rains during the monsoon season would cause the floors to flood and crack, and the walls were not strong enough to hang a black board. In spite of these setbacks, classes continued. With its limited resources, the Hawaipur School has not only increased opportunities for children, it has inspired in them a standard of excellence that has made their students among the top in the area. In 2008 the Hawaipur School constructed a concrete school building. |
