Smiling Face Orphanage
|
 |
Type:
Orphanage
Location: Paynesville, Liberia, Liberia
Organization: James E Cooper Child Foundational Academy
Description: The James E. Cooper and Smiling Face Orphanage was established by Rev. Marie Cooper to provide shelter for the most vulnerable victims of the seven year civil war in Liberia: the orphans. In 1999, Rev. Cooper donated her estate in Paynesville, a suburb of Monrovia (capital of Liberia), to house 15 children and 2 matrons. In addition to providing meals for the children, the James E. Cooper Child Foundational Academy, an arm of the orphanage, provides education through scholarships. All the children currently attend the James E. Cooper Child Foundational Academy. The eleven girls and four boys range in age from 6 to15 years old. The children come from all over Liberia and some have been staying at the orphanage since 2000. This project seeks to provide funds to purchase staples and protein such as rice, potatoes, yams, fish, meat, chicken and vegetables to feed the children. This is particularly urgent as resources are being re-directed towards expanding the location to accommodate an additional 45 orphans. |
